What kind of small tree would grow in a place that is hard to grow trees?

I had two shrubs in this spot and they died. Good sun, several feet away from thriving Azaleas. Azaleas will not grow in the spot.

Odd, azaleas usually grow in slightly acidic soil. Yet a few feet away they won%26#039;t grow. Hmmm, depends upon your area as to what you can put there. I%26#039;d suggest removing the soil and replacing it with new dirt for starters, and enhance the soil with some manure and compost. Perhaps an Alberta Spruce, fairly maintanence free. Or a perrinial plant for contrast, maybe a butterfly bush or a clump of tall grass.
Reply:try a mimosa tree. i don%26#039;t know where you live, but you can%26#039;t STOP them from growing around here, so i can%26#039;t imagine anyone having a hard time getting one to grow. they are mid-size, not really small.

here%26#039;s the best picture i could find:

it says it%26#039;s a southwestern tree, but i don%26#039;t live in the southwest, i live in illinois.

you can get your soil tested, i%26#039;ve heard of other people doing it, but i don%26#039;t know where.
Reply:something might be wrong with your soil,i wouldnt try to plant any trees or shrubs there til you knew for sure.maybe you could try planting flowers there.
