Shade gardening in North Carolina, any suggestions?

I have 5 boxwoods in front of my house. I am going to add some azalea bushes and then was thinking about some Hostas. What else do you think would look good with these bushes/hostas? The soil isn%26#039;t the red clay you usually see around here but it isn%26#039;t great either and the spot is south facing, only gets some morning sunlight and then it is deep shade from the large oaks in the front yard.

Shade gardening in North Carolina, any suggestions?
Hmm.... I would recommend you add some angelinas (annuals) or snap dragons (which should over-winter, too), maybe some foxglove if there is enough morning sun. Painter%26#039;s Pallette is also a nice plant for shade. If it can be kept moist enough, you can add coral bells, hakonia and bleeding heart to make it showier. If it is drier, you could include varigated eonymus for some color. You might want to look at some of the varigated azaleas to lighten the area as well and hydrangeas will do good. We also have a gardenia in our shade garden and it does really well in our poor soil.
Reply:As a footing.. Flowers that do not reach bush height..wal mart and about any garden center sell a shaker can of wild flowers that grow in the shade..Read the can they make mixes for sun loving flowers and make a mix for shade loving flowers..Each can has about 10,000 seedss in it.. turn the soil about an inch deep..sprinkle the can of seeds over it..them loosely rake the loosened soil over the seeds..only about 1/4 inch is necessary..then water as directed..Here is an example of what I am talking about..they require very little care just water properly...A can at wal mart is 3.99 I believe..you can get a sun mix a shade mix or a partial shade/sun mix
Reply:i%26#039;d put some bleeding heart in it. i%26#039;d also say lily of the valley, but if you plant those then u have to keep it in a pot or else it will dominate other plants.
Reply:Impatiens are easy to grow in the shade, not to $, they add lots of color. They grow about 10-12 inches tall. You%26#039;ll have to factor in some time to water because they need it when it gets really hot in late July/August.
Reply:Try some bee balm (monaradia).
Reply:Hostas or begonias would work well, as would caladiums.
