Perennials for Maryland Area?

Is this good time to plant perennials in the MD area? Any suggestion of sturdy flowering perennials aside from azaleas or hydrengias.?

Perennials for Maryland Area?
As a Marylander, you should definitely consider Black-Eyed Susans. They%26#039;re your state flower and native to the area. You can plant them anytime. Other great perennials include Coreopsis (aka Tickseed), Butterfly Bush (gets big though), Blanketflower, all forms of Daisies, and Lavender. For shady areas, I really love Digitalis (Foxglove) - it spreads nicely over time. Lupines, however, hate our soil in the area and tend to rot out. I would avoid Roses unless you like punishment. The mid-atlantic region is not a happy place for roses. They%26#039;re subject to blackspot, powdery mildew and Japanese Bettles. The Washington Garden Club doesn%26#039;t even have a Rose Show anymore it%26#039;s so difficult to grow roses here.

Bulbs work too - Irises do well in this area, and of course the staples: Daffodils and Tulips.

Reply:Vinca either major or minor. (Periwinkle)
Reply:Hi. I live in Maryland. I agree with much that Itsnot.. said above except for the comments about roses. I have several old fashioned roses that need no care except to prune to keep them in check. I have also seen too many roses growing neglected in long abandoned roadside gardens, still poking up and blooming among competing vegetation. To Itsnot..%26#039;s list I would add bleeding heart and Aster.
